Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy
is helpful for people who would like to improve their ability to
cope with difficulties and problems in their lives.
Psychotherapy is a process where you and your therapist work together to discover what events, situations, and relationships in your current or earlier life are leaving you with uncomfortable feelings or ineffective ways of dealing with your world. During therapy you will work towards acquiring new, more effective, and more helpful ways of understanding your experiences and the events in your life. This can allow you to then manage your responses to difficult situations more appropriately, and your reactions can become less automatic and become based more on understanding and choice.
Psychotherapy differs from counselling in that a counsellor will help you to understand a specific situation in your life, whereas a psychotherapist will help you to understand yourself better. In other words, a counsellor looks at "how do I...?" and a psychotherapist looks at "why do I...?"
Psychotherapy sessions usually occur weekly and continue for as long
as needed. Generally speaking, psychotherapy tends to be longer term
than counselling (although brief psychotherapy can also be very
helpful). A psychotherapist can help you make sense of the deeper
aspects of your life and aims at increasing your understanding of
yourself and your interactions with others.
